Abstract

To understand the effects of phytohemoagglutinin (PHA) on the tissue mast cell (MC), PHA prepared from the saline extract of Phaseolus vulgaris was injected into the the tail vein of albino rat and MC was counted microscopically after toluidin blue stain.
The results obtained are as following:
1. MC in thymus, spleen and lymphnode revealed increase in number after PHA injection.
2. Increase in MC content was only noted in the normal form and no change in count was noted in the diffuse form.
3. By PHA injection, increase in normal form MC content was noted from 2nd day and revealed highest level on 3rd day persisting to 6th day.
4. Degrees of this maximum MC response on 3rd day were different by organ showing thymus 85%, spleen 57% and lymphnode 50% compared to normal count of each organ.
5. MC content of tongue, skin and mesenterium revealed no change in both form by PHA injection. PHA seems to be related with proliferation of MC in lymphoid tissue.
